At 6:11pm this evening, Medina Firefighters were dispatched for a reported industrial oven on fire at BMP,11625 Maple Ridge Rd. Also responding on the first alarm was the Shelby Vol. Fire Company with an engine and the Lyndonville Fire Department with a Firefighter Assist and Search Team (FAST).
Firefighters were on scene within minutes and found a large quantity of smoke coming from the building. Crews met an employee who directed them into the industrial warehouse. Firefighters found a large industrial oven on fire. Crews worked quickly to extinguish the fire and successfully contained any fire damage to the oven only.
The oven was appoximately 216 cubic feet in size and is used to remove moisture from parts manufactured at the BMP facility. BMP is a worldwide manufacturing company specializing in the manufacture and conversion of technical, non-woven textiles and engineered polyurethane elastomers for a diverse range of industrial applications.
Due to the large size of the building, which was heavily charged with smoke, a second alarm was called to bring additional fire companies, with ventilation fans, to help clear the smoke from the building. Assisting at the scene with additional equipment were firefighters from Ridgeway, East Shelby, Albion, and Middleport.
Crews remained on scene for approximately two hours, evacuating smoke from the building. The oven is listed as a total loss. It is estimated that it will cost several hundred-thousand dollars to replace. No civilians or firefighters were injured.
With the exception of the involved oven, crews were able leave the building operable and BMP remains open for business.
