Community Smoke Detector Program
There have been multiple fatal fires in our area and across New York State recently, and unfortunately there has been an all too common connection—the evidence of nonworking smoke alarms.
On May 27, 2008 State Fire Administrator Floyd Madison issued an Urgent Warning to the fire service and citizens of New York State. His warning reaffirms the value that working smoke alarms have in protecting people from the tragedy of a home fire death and emphasize the need to continue planning and practicing home fire escape plans.
The State Fire Administrator also urged all fire departments to redouble their efforts related to raising the public consciousness of the importance of working smoke alarms. One such effort is a fire department smoke detector installation program.
The Medina Fire Department has received a grant for $1,000 from Wal-Mart to purchase smoke detectors which will be installed in the homes of village residents. Hahn Hardware has partnered with the fire department to supply the smoke detectors to the fire department program.
Village residents can contact the fire department at 585-798-1661 and request up to 2 smoke detectors be installed in their homes, free of charge.
The Medina Fire Department urges residents to participate in this program. Installing and maintaining smoke detectors in the home is a very simple life saving measuring.
