What is the Medina Firefighters' Benevolent Association?
The Medina Firefighters' Benevolent Association is established under the Foreign fire tax program under sections 9104 and 9105 of the NYS Insurance Department.
The program mandates that any foreign or alien insurance company that writes fire insurance in New York State, must contribute 2% of the fire premiums written on property located in NYS to be distributed to the fire departments and fire districts statewide. Proceeds from the foreign fire tax company are intended to be used for the fire departments and their members. The moneys may be used for any purpose which the members determine to be for the benefit of the fire department or company.
Some examples of use of proceeds are: department social functions - such as installation dinners, picnics, banquets, holiday parties; appliances, furniture, televisions for the firehouse; dress & parade uniforms, hats, boots, jackets, t-shirts, turn out gear, and equipment for members of the department; offset of costs from life or disability insurance (must be group policies); and office equipment such as computers and fax machines.
Any expenditure of foreign fire tax funds should be for the benefit of the department and the membership as a whole and must be voted on by the members of that department.
